SHIER’S MODEL

Harry Shier is another important figure that has influenced thinking on children’s participation. He is the founder of Cesesma (discussed again later) and, as with Hart, is driven by creating opportunities for children’s participation (through amplifying their voice) that are relevant to them and which might play a part in shaping their everyday lives.

In a practical context Shier’s pathways offer groups and organisations an action-driven guide through which to make visible a defined language for children’s engagement. It is a model that clearly highlights establishing the voice of the child and encourages consideration of how that might then form part of practice. As a model it is has an organisational focus which means that it is harder to apply to those informal spaces and opportunities where advocacy, in the context of this book, is also seen as having great value. That said, it offers a really useful start.
